Though it was necessary for Drona to die to end the major battle, it seems unfair how it was done. Apparently, unless he knew his son was dead he would not die. Bhima figures this out and slays an elephant with the same name as his son just to say "Ashwatthaman is dead."
Yudhisthira can't lie and so Drona asks him to confirm this statement. He says it's true and follows the statement with "the elephant," but I guess Drona doesn't catch those words. This is where he loses hope and Dhrishtadyumna makes a killing swing. His lovely head gets thrown around and that is the end of Drona.
